Lessons Learned During Outdoor Photography Shots

Lesson 1) The cormorant is standing in the sun drying out his wings for an extended period of time because their wings have less preen oil than other birds and not because, as you thought, they are one of the rare birds that enjoys posing for photos.

Lesson 2) The Great Blue Heron has not flown to this secluded spot in shallow, mucky water for a better nature shot, but to laugh at you as you attempt to kayak closer for a better shot with the muck flying everywhere, including into your hair.

Lesson 3) You are now middle-aged and your balancing skills are not what they use to be, so as you crouch down for an eye-level flower shot while holding your camera and the dog’s leash, one tug by the dog can result in tumbling over in the flower garden and having a sprained finger when you land.

Lesson 4)  Remember when you scout the location of your next shot, that there is a good chance that the lens you decide you need is not in your bag and there is always some question you failed to consider – such as, is the lighthouse under repair?

Lesson 5) Everyone has a bad hair day, be respectful and pretend not to notice.

Lesson 6) If you plan on working on your action shots by hanging out by the bird feeder for a shot, make sure you are not standing in the landing zone where you may be exposed to things falling from the sky and landing on your arm.

  2. I love this! Capturing perfect photos for post can be very difficult sometimes. I was just explaining this to a friend the other day. He didn’t understand it until I explained all that actually goes into the process. Great post, and pictures!

    1. Thank you very much! It’s funny how some days the difficulty is capturing the photos or thinking of a blog title and other days you can deal with a complete lack of creativity or missed photo opportunities. I really enjoy the challenge and I’m so glad you enjoyed the post!

    1. Thank you! I can laugh about it all now, except maybe the muck in the hair. That thought causes more of a grimace.

    1. Thank you! Kayaking through the shallow water was definitely a pitfall and hopefully by next summer I’ll be over it and ready to follow the herons into the muck again.

    1. Outdoor photography continues to be a learning experience. A valuable lesson learned this summer after dropping my phone in the lake while kayaking and retrieving it from the bottom is to keep your phone in a floatable/waterproof case and, especially this summer, to always have a plastic bag for your camera for those unexpected rain showers.
