Birds and Baseball

Over the years I have dreamt about a variety of sporting vacations.  There is the dream of going sightseeing in Scotland and Ireland and playing golf on their amazing courses or biking around Europe during the Tour de France and the yearly summer dream of traveling across the United States in an RV and catching a baseball game at all the stadiums.  Over the last week while I’ve been out watching the birds or indoors watching the new baseball season, I began to wonder if my relatively new fascination with bird watching had any similarities to my love of going to a baseball game.

When we first arrived at the Osprey nest it was empty and I had a slightly similar feeling to when we traveled to another state for a baseball game and my favorite player, Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals, was not in the line-up.

I was so glad when these two arrived and while I would have liked to have closer seats, like seats behind the dugout at a baseball game, the atmosphere at the park was perfect.

Whether at the park or the ballpark, always be mindful of incoming objects that could catch you by surprise.

It is possible to encounter all sorts of characters and behavior at the ballpark or park and

it’s always a perfect day leaving after watching one of your favorites take a home-run lap.

  2. I love the words and photos, ACI. The comparison is clever. And here’s something that I find not only useful, but enlightening at both activities: a good pair of binoculars. Wonderful and creative post.

    1. Thank you and I’m so glad you enjoyed the baseball and birds analogy! It might be a little bit of a stretch, but I’ve absolutely enjoyed bird watching and my enthusiasm for looking for a great action shot and wondering what birds will show up be on the roster at the park reminded me of going to a baseball game. Thanks for mentioning the binoculars, I will take them with me this weekend.

  3. Might as well start watching baseball, seeing as the hockey season is over! I’ll watch some more playoff games once I’ve stopped sulking…
Lovely photographs, and I can recommend a golf tour of Ireland (I barely play, but the courses and scenery, as well as the people, make it a fine experience!)

    1. Thank you and I’m sorry the Flames are out of the playoffs. I think my Blackhawks will be the next team to go, but I still have several teams left. I highly recommend watching baseball, especially Bryce Harper who had a grand slam last night. I’m keeping all three of these trips on my bucket list and going to Ireland and Scotland would be at the top of the list.

    1. Thank you! I was disappointed when I arrived to an empty nest, but they showed up within minutes and they were a joy to watch as they visited the nest and flew around the lake on several occasions.

I used to live in Florida and see them a lot, however they are petty rare in Illinois.

    1. Thank you! I was lucky this week to see an osprey for the first time and I’m looking forward to having the chance to see their young.
