Prayer of the Woods

I am the heat of your hearth on the cold winter nights, the friendly shade screening you from the summer sun, and my fruits are refreshing draughts quenching your thirst as you journey on.  I am the beam that holds your house, the board of your table, the bed on which you lie, and the timber that builds your boat.  I am the handle of your hoe, the door of your homestead, the wood of your cradle, and the shell of your coffin.  I am the bread of kindness and the flower of beauty.  Ye who pass by, listen to my prayer:  harm me not.

    Great shots! I was there two years ago in June. The water was flowing just about like these shots. I really enjoy visiting the Upper Peninsula (except for the gnats!)

      Thank you!🙂 These were taken thirteen years ago on a trip around the Upper Peninsula. I don’t remember having trouble with the bugs on that particular trip to the UP, but I do remember the heavy fog we encountered on many stops along Lake Superior.

      Thank you!🙂 I have wonderful memories of that trip to the Upper Peninsula, but unfortunately I did not have a photo of the sign with this verse that is located within the park.

      We have encountered a variety of weather conditions every time we have travelled to the UP and I’m still hoping one day to visit in the winter.

    Wow, the Tahquamenon Falls are magnificent. Your photos provide a great presentation of their beauty and power, and I really like the quote too. I always love it when waterfalls have colors from minerals in the water, like these. I have never heard of this park, but if I am ever in the Upper Peninsula, I will definitely look this up.       Thank you!🙂 My love of being by the water was completely fulfilled during this trip to the UP. In addition to traipsing through the woods to see different waterfalls, especially the beautiful Tahquamenon Falls, I absolutely loved the time spent along Lake Superior.🙂

      Thank you! The amber color of the water is caused by tannins leached from the cedar, spruce and hemlock in the swamps drained by the river.
