Porch Rules

No front porches. ย My uncle says there used to be front porches. ย And people sat there sometimes at night, talking when they wanted to talk, rocking, and not talking when they didn’t want to talk. ย Sometimes they just sat there and thought about things, turned things over. ย My uncle says the architects got rid of the front porches because they didn’t look well…They didn’t want people sitting like that, doing nothing, rocking, talking, that was the wrong kind of social life. ย People talked too much. ย And they had time to think. ย So they ran off with the porches.

  1. Yup. And they designed TV nooks to turn us into zombies and make us buy things we don’t need. Conspiracy?

    1. Definitely a conspiracy and I’m all for following the porch rules, especially enjoying a good book while sipping a drink.๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Maybe that’s what’s wrong with our country! Too few front porches.

    1. Yep, more porches, a daily dose of the porch rules and the time “to think and turn things over” might make a difference.๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Fab quote. Love that book. Wish I had a porch. Just a quiet doorstep, and a bench in the garden in full view of my invasive neighbour, so not so quiet…

    1. One of those great books where by the end of a chapter I discover I have highlighted almost half of the chapter. I’ve always loved the older homes with porches around Main Street in many of our local downtowns and country homes with wraparound porches.๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I would so love a porch. Sadly, Irish homes rarely have them. ๐ŸŒผ

    1. Decks took over when they ran away with the porches and I love whenever I see a porch, especially a wraparound porch.๐Ÿ™‚

      3. he is very good! I found his short stories in a very dusty, dreadfully muddled and mangled book fair in a ghastly old house in Bangalore and it cost just 20 rupees! and so much magic stored in them! there is one story where three women are knitting or crocheting or something which is astounding!

    1. Yes!! If I hear about an Up North lake community with affordable beach houses with wraparound porches, porch rules and an independent bookstore and coffee shop within bike riding distance, I’m moving.๐Ÿ™‚

  8. The brilliant Ray Bradbury makes us think. I agree – Porch RULES for sure. My guy and I ignored our ‘new’ porch (moved to our new place four years ago) for three years. Other things to fix in the place. Then, finally, this spring we placed two (yes, rocking) chairs on our front porch. We sat there every day, rain, shine, hot, cool, and read, talked, drank our tea. We met neighbors we’d never talked to before. We met dogs and cats and now have a particularly good relationship with an ‘under-the-porch’ chipmunk. Oh, and we fill our bird feeder every day and laugh at the shenanigans of our feathery friends.
    The porch rules.
