I’m So Excited, And I Just Can’t Hide It

I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it now that I have finally captured my first photo of an owl in the wild. ย This exciting, fabulous Barred owl was in my backyard Saturday morning and I almost missed seeing him. ย I recently watched a photography video on light and the rare sighting this week of sunshine yesterday morning motivated me to go out in the below zero weather to try to capture the sunlight on the snow. ย I was completely oblivious to all the excitement waiting in the trees behind me while I searched for glistening snow.

Luckily when I finished capturing this shot, that I hoped would convey the thought of a snow wave with the light sparkling on the surface, I noticed something flying away as I glanced over my shoulder. ย This was my original sighting of the owl taken with my Tamron 18-400mm lens before cropping.

I managed six shots of him perched on this branch before he flew away and I so hope the brief wink he gave me before he flew away was a promise of a return visit.

This fellow was waiting for me as I returned to the house and wondered why I do not hear The Pointer Sistersย music playing in my head when I spot him out in the yard.

    1. Thank you and it was so exciting to discover him in the tree!๐Ÿ™‚ When I originally glanced over I thought maybe a Cooperโ€™s hawk just flew by and was stunned when I found him in the woods. I already went out looking for him this morning.๐Ÿ˜

      1. haha I don’t doubt it. But maybe the reason the owl stayed around was just Because you weren’t focused on him! ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. “I’m about to lose control and I think I like it.” This is what barred owls do to us. lol. I am so very happy for you, ACI, photographing your first owl in the wild. So adventurous of you to be out in the frigid weather taking photos, and the sparkling snow is gorgeous. Then to find the barred owl, well, it’s just great that you could contain yourself long enough to snap off these lovely photos without bursting into song. Great to have the sun shining, too.

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ It was such an exciting discovery to see him perched there when I was expecting to see a hawk. I often make the mistake of taking one extra step when watching a bird, but I froze in my tracks when I spotted him. He left so quickly and I hope that is not a sign that I disturbed his routine and he will not be back. I have heard him at night periodically over the last month and I hope that means he intends to stay in the area and that he might be stopping by for a visit again.๐Ÿ™‚

      1. That is what I thought. One came to our backyard years ago. In chasing a rodent, the owl flew on the ground right beneath our bathroom window, and I was able to stare directly into its beautiful, soulful eyes. No wonder the Greeks associated owls with wisdom.

  11. Always a thrill to have an owl visit. In 27 years here, I only recall four sightings. They are more often heard than seen.

    1. It was so much fun to see him for that brief moment and Iโ€™m sure I will be looking for him every time Iโ€™m outdoors for a while. Thanks to Gabby, I am outside in the yard throughout the day and evening and have heard him in the distance on several occasions and maybe Iโ€™ll be lucky enough to see him again.๐Ÿ™‚

  14. They are cool. We have one that hangs out around our house, but I only know he’s there at night when he sings/hoots or whatever you call that. It is so neat to hear them call out – the sound is like nothing I have ever heard. I never see him during the day though. Thanks for sharing.

      1. if you can’t being Muhammad to the mountain….bring the mountain to Muhammad!
you have to do it in a place where you can wait without it seeing you? Near a house or barn? Use a dog nail to keep it there too.A dog nail is basically a large staple.By keeping it pinned there,it’ll have to stay there trying to free it.Cause if you just place it there, you’ll have about one second & thats all she wrote.

  18. Ooh how wonderful! I too would be so excited. I have occasionally seen a whoosh of wings if out walking of an evening which has come and gone so fast we’ve said ‘was that an owl or a bat?’ We frequently hear owls, and my neighbour did actually see a barn owl last week. I’ve never properly seen one in the wild. You are so lucky.

    1. Thank you and I hope you have a chance to see the barn owl in your neighborhood!!๐Ÿ™‚ It was so exciting and I had a chance to see him fly through the woods this morning. We had a bat living above our deck last summer and I was not as excited to see him every day.๐Ÿ™‚
