Wonderful images, I’ve never seen them nest so close together! ๐Ÿ˜„

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ This was my first visit to a rookery and I was surprised at how close they were to one another. You could tell by their squawking when another heron landed on the wrong branch.๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Rookeries are endless entertainment and lots of hope. Great photos, ACI — that rich blue sky is the perfect backdrop.

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ It was wonderful to watch the herons building their nests at a rookery for the first time and I wish I could have stayed there all day. I have no idea why, but during sad and stressful times Iโ€™ve never been able to lose myself in a book or binge watch tv shows in order to not think. I think Iโ€™ve tried to read a dozen books lately. Iโ€™ve discovered that a few hours outdoors watching the wildlife with my camera is a great escape and there is always something there to smile about.๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Thank you and Iโ€™m glad you enjoyed the commentary and photos!๐Ÿ™‚ It was fascinating to watch them build their nests while they were keeping an eye on their neighbors. We have rain for the next few days, but Iโ€™m hoping for a return visit after that.๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Iโ€™ve wanted to see a rookery after viewing so many wonderful photos on other blogs and it was amazing to watch the herons build their nests and interact with one another. Iโ€™m hoping for a return visit soon.๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Enjoy your return visit – those branches will sound like a nursery in no time once filled with young chicks! I wonder if their sounds will be delicate or “robust”?

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ I wish I had been able to return today, it was finally a perfect spring day with sunshine and seventy degrees (too windy to kayak). I will now have to wait for a return visit after the next round of rain and snow.๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Great shots. I’ve never seen a rookery before – it’s like an apartment complex!

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ That was my first visit to one and, as an introvert, all I could think was how much room was available in the rest of that tree and the surrounding trees. Iโ€™ve never seen two together while kayaking and compared to the distance between nests for swans and cranes on the lake, it was amazing to watch them nesting together.๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Awesome! ๐Ÿ™‚ Heron’s are very elusive in our rural area. Too many crass, law-breaking hunters!

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ Iโ€™m hoping to go kayaking this summer at this park and it will be interesting to see how many remain in the area.๐Ÿ™‚

Those sticky nests look way too fragile to support such large birds!

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ It was amazing to watch the nest building and see the males fly into the nests with more sticks while maneuvering between all the nests, branches and other herons protecting their area.๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Haha brilliant. There’s a rookery down my road, it’s noisy and overcrowded. It seems strictly for rooks only though, the herons don’t go near. How cool to see them nest-building.

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ Out weather has been horrible, but Iโ€™m hoping they are still building their nests this weekend when our weather improves and I have a chance to watch them again.๐Ÿ™‚
