A Quiet Place

I often seek out the quiet places, but after watching the movieΒ A Quiet PlaceΒ recommended by my niece starring Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, I discovered a few things about the necessity of silence to survive in this suspenseful horror film.

The first discovery was that it would be almost impossible for Gabby and I to “live by one rule – never make a sound.” Β The tweets of little birds could never drown out Gabby’s barking or my instant noisy reactions to seeing spiders in my kayak.

I’ve never glided smoothly on my feet or in my kayak and the angry outbursts of a Great Blue Heron would probably not camouflage the sounds of the paddle hitting the water.

Like the distant freighter that surprised me in this photo, there was an amazing discovery in the movie. Β I have lost track of how many times over the years I have given Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young a thumbs down on Pandora. Β In this very suspenseful movie where Harvest MoonΒ by Neil Young was played on their headphones, and was the only lengthy sound in the movie, I finally discovered that I would actually choose their music over silence.Β

I might be able to survive being silent in a garden as long as I can discover a way to swat mosquitos quietly. Β I haven’t watched a horror film in years and I let my niece know that in the future I want a full review with spoilers before I watch another one.

  1. I enjoyed your very entertaining post and photos πŸ™‚ I love things to be quiet – as in no man-made noises like lawn mowers or the builders next door who have been going for 2 months now! I love to be able to hear the birds chirping and the splash of the Olive Thrush taking his bath in LM’s water bowl!
As to horror films, I avoid them! The last one I watched years ago with my girls, was The Others, with Nicole Kidman – scared me half to death!!

    1. Thank you very much!πŸ™‚ I was amazed watching the movie at all the ways they achieved living in total silence and my fascination with that storyline helped me survive through the gripping suspense. I can barely make it through horror movie previews when I’m at the theater, but between the make no sound premise and two of my favorites starring in the movie I had to check it out. I enjoyed the movie, but I made sure to tell my niece I’ll probably have nightmares for weeks.😁

I haven’t seen the movie, but from the reviews I’ve read, I gather there are lots of plot holes. Never mind! Far too scary for me. I’m a wimp when it comes to horror movies.

    1. All the times I saw the preview, I was left wondering if they could pull off the β€œmake no sound” storyline and they definitely did. I discovered I still jump while watching horror movies and that for one who seeks the quiet places, I would never survive it being too quiet.πŸ™‚

      1. Really good points! And there is a difference between quiet and silence all the time. I, too, need lots of quiet time, but I value the conversations I have with family and friends and beloved pets.

  3. “Kayak Spiders” – there’s a B movie horror…
Fun post, and I’m looking forward to seeing the movie sometime soon (alone, and in a darkened room!)
Neil Young’s Harvest Moon is a wonderful track, but then I’d say that about much of his music.

    1. Thank you!πŸ™‚ I’m quite the kayak spider inspector, but I always feel like there is one still lurking somewhere.😁 We were not sure if the never make a sound concept would work, but now I wish my niece and I had seen the movie at the theater. I could have annoyed her between tossing some popcorn on her when I jumped throughout the movie and my endless comments and questions.😁 I might have had a CSNY breakthrough during the movie and will no longer have to mutter at Pandora that their music cannot possibly be similar to every song or musician I select.😁

  4. I NEVER watch horror films (or violent ones, either) as my cortisol levels are high enough as it is, thank you very much! ;D

    1. I let my niece know about the many, many scenes she should have told me about before I watched the movie.😁

  5. Magnificent Monarch! πŸ™‚ I’m contributing to a drive to have Monarch decals made for Illinois license plates; the funding would help increase Milkweed plants in the state.

    1. Thank you!πŸ™‚ I hope the funding drive is a success and it was wonderful to see a monarch fly through the yard last week.πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you!πŸ™‚ I haven’t had a horror movie phase since high school and now I’ve watched two in one week. Pretty soon I will need to keep the lights on in the house around the clock.😁
