The Week In Seven Photos

I discovered over the last week that I’m willing to suffer for my art. ย There were moments when the excruciating back and leg pain turned me into an armchair photographer,

but after the pain was finally under control I was ready to try a chair by the window for a little nature photography. ย I immediately discovered that I am only willing to suffer so much for my art and that my heavy Tamron 150-600mm lens will have to stay in the bag for the next month. ย A different lens would require me finding a way to entice the birds to come closer to the window and in the brutal snow storm, frigid temperatures and -35 wind chill, they were happy for the extra bird seed.

ย The birds were out every day in the record-setting cold weather patiently waiting for the bird feeders to be filled again

and the word spread quickly throughout the bird community that there was more bird seed available and the turkeys flew in for breakfast every morning after another night of roosting in our trees.

Thankfully there were thirty turkeys flying in so that allowed manyย opportunitiesย to capture a photo.

Hopefully this weekend I will actually be outdoors with the birds and a camera since we are due to have a ninety degree weather change by Monday, although in the beginning I will probably only be carrying my phone.

Then again, it’s Super Bowl weekend so I still may be indoors with the camera watching the birds enjoy the new bird feeders, enjoying Super Bowl snacks and muttering (VERY LOUDLY) about the New England Patriots and Tom Brady and wishing I was watching the New Orleans Saints win the Super Bowl. ย Once the muttering is over,ย the Baseball Opening Day countdown begins and I continue to hope for news that Bryce Harper hasย finallyย signed with a team and it’s the New York Yankees.

  1. You still managed some beautiful photos ๐Ÿ™‚
I always feel so sorry for the tiny little birds in such cold weather, even though I know feathers are really warm – but are they warm enough?

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ The little birds were out at the bird feeders all day through the cold and snow with the same energy they always have, but the turkeys were huddled together throughout most of the day in between very brief visits.

      1. Maybe the larger turkeys need more food to keep warm?
But fun to see so many birds still. ๐Ÿ™‚

      2. The birds are always fun to watch and there are usually one to two characters in the group.๐Ÿ™‚ The turkeys looked so miserable that I checked online how they handle the cold and it said if they have enough food they can survive. Weโ€™ve been putting extra bird seed out throughout the day and where they usually only visit a few days each week, they havenโ€™t left our yard the entire week.๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Another year of strange weather patterns. Record-setting cold here while Australia in January experienced their hottest month in history.

      1. Oh, I know. And still we release carbon as though it doesn’t matter.

  3. Very game birds! It seems like your back and the weather are both improving – good news!
You appear to have your own turkey farm. I hope the game is a good one, and you find some time to head outdoors – enjoy your weekend!

    1. I will be thrilled to be outdoors wandering around in the warm weather!๐Ÿ™‚ Iโ€™ve been keeping busy with Seinfeld and Justified marathons while Iโ€™ve been trapped in the house and I may have to return to them if I find myself muttering too much during the game. Enjoy the weekend!๐Ÿ™‚

  4. 90 degree change, wow, hard to fathom!
Sorry you are having discomfort… did you take a spill? Wishing you a speedy recovery, regardless!

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ Mother Nature has been very busy this week and for some reason after weeks of gray weather she has teased us with blue skies as everyone is hiding indoors. The squirrels have finally returned so I think the weather is finally improving. Iโ€™m still dealing with a pinched nerve and thankfully the nerve pain has improved and hopefully physical therapy will fix the numbness in my foot. Enjoy the weekend and I hope the weather is better in your area!๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Oh how I loved every one of these photos, ACI. You really paint a good picture of the brutal winter, the appreciative birds, and the pain of a pinched nerve. I am so grateful to you for feeding the birds in the midst of that harsh weather. And then I just had to laugh (pretty loudly) at your possible concession to watching the Super Bowl. I am a Tom Brady fan, so I will say no more. Except…hope your pain begins to ease.

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ The weather and my pinched nerve are improving and after a brutal week of winter Iโ€™m sure everyone will be happy to be out in warmer temps today. I was happy to help them through the week with all the extra food and I will be glad to see the turkeys running around the yard instead of huddled in groups. After seeing Bradyโ€™s Shakespeare skit on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert some of my muttering has been replaced with a smile. Enjoy the game and Iโ€™ll be thinking of you when Brady wins the Super Bowl and MVP award.๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ™‚
