Ageless Or Aging Musings #6

I’ve always loved the ending to Robert Frost’s poem The Road Not Taken.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.ย

Somehow in my fifties I find myself pausing longer at the two roads and a bench under a beautiful tree can entice me to ignore both roads and appreciate time spent hanging out at the fork in the road not making any decisions and being in the moment enjoying my coffee. ย This saves me from spilling my coffee if I would wander off on one of those roads, and the moment of realization that oh, my mistake again, I’ve been down this road before and it leads to a bloody dead end.

  1. Oh, my! Most of us have been down those roads at one time or another.

  2. What a nice tree to linger by. How weird is it that I read something about this poem only yesterday, about Frost’s friend the British poet Edward Thomas and his indecision about WWI.

    1. I always love finding a park bench to photo or enjoy a coffee and comments like this that have me adding a book about Edward Thomas to my want to read list.๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Great photograph, a lovely poem, and you captured the ambiguity of decision-making – and, yes, opt to sit and have a cup of coffee seems a reasonable response!

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ I laughed when I read your comment when I wondered if my ordering the same coffee for the last twenty years has been a part of my goal of simplifying life over the years so that some days hopefully my only decision is what park bench I should enjoy it on.๐Ÿ˜

  4. I don’t know much about Thomas except he was a poet, an introvert, suffered from depression, loved walking and was killed during 1st world war. The book I read is called The Old Ways by Robert Mcfarlane and is a wonderful book about walking and much recommended. I too feel the need to discover Robert Frost and Edward Thomas more.
