Monday Musings

Self-Isolation Trend #10

We are reaching the point where soon many people will be leaving their home office of the last few months and the steady companionship of their pets to return to their real workplaces.  A troubling trend that could be on the horizon for everyone that will be allowed to leave their homes regularly is separation anxiety, which may not happen between every person in the house, but will definitely occur with the adoring pets.  We brought Harper home last April and I’ve been accused since day one of ruining the precious pup, so there is no surprise that we live in a continual state of separation anxiety around here.

I have no idea what this constant companionship over the last two months will do to our state of mind since I’ve already been experiencing very unusual and unexpected separation anxiety attacks. I’ve always been an Anderson Cooper fan, but over the last two months he’s begun to feel like family since he’s been spending an incredible amount of time in our living room as we watch more CNN news coverage than usual and the Coronavirus Town Hall specials with Dr. Sanjay Gupta.  Just last week when he was missing for a few days, we were beginning to worry and panic until we saw the wonderful news that he had been missing because he became a new father.

I was able to share more stories about Anderson and his family with Harper, through teary eyes, since we always celebrate New Year’s Eve together and I’ve been reading about the Vanderbilts and Anderson Cooper for years. I also had photos and wonderful memories to share of visiting the Vanderbilt family summer cottage, The Breakers, back in the late ’80s (ok, not visiting, but touring and I do know he’s not really family).

Well, after this latest separation anxiety episode, Harper wants everyone to know that while maybe people should worry about me, she will be absolutely fine when I’m finally allowed to regularly leave the house without her and she’ll be thrilled to be sleeping peacefully and not photographed.

  1. I think it will be a shock to many dogs when their owners finally get to leave home and go back to work. The cats, however, will be waving them off at the doorstep with instructions not to hurry back! 😀 😀
Little Harper is too cute – I will miss all her photos after lockdown – but I’m sure you can still sneak a few. 🙂

    1. Thank you!🐾😁 Loved your cat comment and I think Harper might actually be enjoying the photo shoots, even if she still closes her eyes during most of the shots.🐾😁

  2. Another great picture of Harper, this time reading a book. I must say, she looks very learned. Not only sweet, but wise. A winning combination.

  3. Do you have a back-to-work date set yet? It’s going to feel weird going back to the ‘regularly scheduled programming.’ 😉

    1. Our state is slowly beginning in phases the opening of some business with no idea when the official stay-at-home order will end. I really don’t know how people who have to are going to handle everything since currently my comfort zone has completely disappeared when I’m around people and new situations. I think Harper and I will have a record-setting year of reading books together.🐾📖🙂

  5. On the few occasions I head out without Scout, she looks most aggrieved! Can’t believe Harper has been with you a year. I’d say time flies, but that isn’t true right now…
Definitely having separation anxiety as far as the coast goes. We’re wondering if and when we can safely head back out there, and if there’ll be any real work for me come September. The communities I was in are particularly vulnerable, health wise. It’ll be nice to stroll on a (near empty) beach after these weeks in the city.
Here’s to a return to the new normal sometime safely soon!

    1. The little drama queen already has perfected a routine to make me feel guilty if she believes she’s about to be left home alone.🐾😁 The only places right now where the world feels normal is reading, watching too much Netflix (I keep hoping Tom Hardy gets a new series based on the Peaky Blinders character) and out on the lake kayaking. I’ve always thought there’s a special peace to being by water and I hope you guys are back walking along the beach soon and can enjoy a pint by the harbor. So much of our news the last few days has been about reopening states and I’m having a very difficult time imagining we’re anywhere close to being ready or even if we will be at all this year. I really hope I’m wrong and we have a medical treatment breakthrough so we won’t have increased hotspots and second waves and that you’ll be able to return back home and inspire the kids in the fall. I still think a new home office on the Tromso for your book/beer research could work in the new normal or I’m happy to provide an old classic for a project if you want to write about car restorations too, but I refuse to remember the make/model since it has only been referred to over the many, many years as the car that arrived home in boxes of parts.😁
