Today’s Musings

There’s plenty to keep an eye on

or squawk about

in the state of Michigan as it leads the US with the highest number of COVID-19 cases per capita and that both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University somehow managed to lose to UCLA in the March Madness tournament. It’s that time of year when many in our state are looking forward to kayaking,

but right now even the lakes aren’t completely cooperating.

While keeping a very jaded eye on the world, at least we can count on the birds staying on schedule and knowing what they’re doing

and who ever thought singing “Honey, I’m Home” would only apply to the birds as some of us are afraid to leave our homes again. Even after receiving my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine I’m not sure when that feeling is going to change and after watching the exciting opening day of the baseball season, I’m still finding it difficult to imagine the day I’ll ever want to be in a crowd after the second dose.

  1. The Tigers got off to a good start, so on the baseball theme – great catch of the herons. …. and I understand the jaded view of humanity at the moment. Oh – I invite you over for a surprise topic of a beach walk.

  2. A wonderful match of words and images, today, ACI. I chuckled at the sandhill crane going kayaking, marveled at the nesting GBH photos, and was dazzled by the killdeer’s eye reflection. Thanks for sharing your week, and best wishes to you during this very strange time, my friend.

    1. Thank you!πŸ™‚ It was a beautiful morning to hang out with the birds at the park and it’s always fun to watch the herons and cranes. We are still having very cold mornings and snow, so the paths haven’t been busy in the morning and the birds and I hope the parks aren’t as busy as last year when the weather improves.πŸ™‚

  3. Beautiful photos! You may have figured out that Michigan is my home state. An old buddy of mine in Elba sends me covid updates, Lapeer had a huge increase lately. Why then is Michigan leading the nation with infections? 99% of my family still lives up there and have had or are halfway through the shot process. I fear for them!

    1. Thank you!πŸ™‚ There have been a few reasons given for the increase, but since our state still has many restrictions in place I think this wave is due to us being a variant hotspot. Right now we’re second to Florida with the most U.K. variant cases and we had our first confirmed case of the Brazil variant yesterday. I had no idea that I would be just as afraid this spring as last year, but hopefully with 20% of our state receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and each week they keep increasing vaccine appointments and locations we can hope that things will improve by summer.

      1. Good Lord, I sure hope so. I have to wonder if this vaccine is effective against the variant strains? Stay safe, give Harper a hug for me, so cute! ❀️

      2. I’m always happy when I see another good report about the effectiveness of the vaccines and Harper says thank you for the hugs!🐾🐾

  5. Beautiful. I agree, stay home, enjoy nature, and baseball from your living room. Kayaking is just around the corner.

    1. Thank you!πŸ™‚ Luckily I have the hockey and baseball packages to watch and Harper prefers early morning walks before the paths are busy.πŸΎπŸ™‚

  6. Great photographs! Yes, I go from hope (having the first vaccination a few weeks ago) to dismay (rising case numbers everywhere) then back to hope (next jab fairly soon?) to dismay (so many tourists ignoring the stay home requests) to I think I’ll open a chocolate egg and have an earlier beer…
    Stay safe!

    1. Thank you!πŸ™‚ With my jaded attitude, I appear to be spending more time in the dismay zone. My Baby Yoda Easter marshmallow pop is already gone and I’m trying to convince myself that it’s safe to go looking for more tomorrow and to stop by a favorite bakery for a few Cadbury chocolate chip cookie cups. Since nobody agrees with me that it’s essential, I guess I’ll have to settle for wine and M&M’s. I don’t know if you’ve already chosen your weekend beer, but Cadbury and Goose Island released a limited edition Creme Stout.πŸ»πŸ™‚

  7. Stay safe and wear those Baby Yoda face masks! Very scary how the virus is still whipping through this country. Will be getting my first shot next week but I am in no hurry to be out and about. We’ll be getting together with friends outside for the next couple months at the very least.

  8. Love the bird pictures. I’m about to have my second vaccine next week but it will be a while before I’m reassimilated back into society. Hope your lake soon unfreezes.

  10. I’m due to have a 2nd dose next month, hopefully. But haven’t been out for months anyway. But we’re cautiously optimistic here in the UK as restrictions gradually lift from the 3rd lockdown. But no indoor mixing or travel permitted yet. It all feels strange. Will be interesting to see what the new normal will looks like. I even dreamed I forgot to wear a mask!! I hope the situation improves where you are very soon. Stay safe.πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you!πŸ™‚ Things continue to get worse here as the hospitalizations are now increasing to capacity and it appears there currently will not be more restrictions. I’m not sure what the new normal will be, but with so much changing this last year I know I will continue making new lifestyle choices in the future.πŸ™‚
