The Week In More Than Seven Photos

Harper was in need of a special treat this week as she’s been left home more often

as my niece and I continue to have a great time on the nature trails.

There have been many fascinating discoveries along the way, the first being that thank god we’re only dealing with birds and not bears because the moment a group of young geese began running out of control toward us we panicked and total chaos ensued.

Immediately my niece jumped behind me while I continued taking photos not realizing how quickly we would be surrounded and yelled at by the parents. Let’s just say the geese won and we were stuck on this portion of the path for some time until the parents made sure all of us were properly scolded.

At least there was one mother happily chatting away with the bird whisperer as the Virgina rail was busy

explaining how difficult it’s been convincing the little ones of all the delicacies that can be found in the muck.

Another discovery has been that surprisingly I do not need to experience such a closeness to nature as my niece. She thought I would be offering some snacks, but I’m very happy to be standing by her with my camera.

She does not have a fondness for red-winged blackbirds

after being attacked previously by a few while we were kayaking and watching their behavior at the park as they chased a sandhill crane did not improve their odds of being offered any snacks,

but I told her she might want to change her mind before one decides to land on her head

or they make being scolded by the geese look like a picnic.

  1. Excellent shots! πŸ˜€
I didn’t think a walk on the wild side would be – well, so wild! πŸ˜€

    1. Thank you!😁 I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told my niece that I did not see anything exciting during a walk and with her along I can’t keep up with all the excitement.😁

  3. Wonderful sequence of picture! Especially the ones of the crane being heckled by the blackbirds.

  4. I would almost rather be too close to a bear (unless there are cubs close by) than be scolded by irritated geese. I think geese are, by default, always irritated, even when there are no goslings to guard. I bet statistically they are more likely to attack? Those trails are loaded with danger – no wonder Harper chose(?!) to stay away, perusing her dining options instead. That is a fun photograph. Not to alarm you, but a friend rushed outside earlier this week to save his tiny terrier from being carried off by a bald eagle. He said it was watching his little dog from atop a telegraph pole overlooking his back yard. It hadn’t swooped down, but he was taking no chances… There you go, another thing to worry about when Harper returns to the trail.
    Have a great weekend!

    1. Thank you!πŸ™‚ Harper cannot believe they won’t allow her on some of the nature trails, especially since for some reason she refuses to acknowledge that there are any birds or animals on our walks. I’ve never seen anything like it, but at home she is slowly becoming an expert at clearing out the backyard and knows that if I would ever let her off the leash and more than ten feet away from me that those squirrels and deer would be in trouble. Thankfully so far the hawks only have eyes for the squirrels and always miss. I asked the bird whisperer what she could have possibly said to encourage the goslings to run away from their parents toward us, but my niece was too busy trying to hide behind me to answer. Enjoy the weekend and hopefully an Islanders win tonight!πŸ™‚

    1. It appears all the sandhill cranes hang out on a different favorite path, but somehow this one thinks he can convince the red-winged blackbirds to share the wonderful boardwalk and I’ve yet to see it work out in his favor.😁

  6. Great phootos, those geese can be really mean! I’ve never had a bird land on my hand, nice!

    1. Thank you!😁 The sandhill cranes have always walked the paths with everyone, but I have no idea what is going on with the geese and why their little ones are out of control. It’s amazing watching the birds land in my niece’s hand and dine so politely.😁

  7. The geese can be aggressive with young ones nearby. I give them a wide berth. The red-wings can be pests, but they’re one of my favorites. Their call is the alert tone on my phone because it really gets my attention. πŸ™‚

    1. The geese were quite a surprise since on the last visit they were a peaceful little family when we walked by and this time we weren’t even walking toward them yet when the little ones took off running from their parents toward us and I’ve never had that happen before. The other family of geese in the water even looked shocked.😁 It took a few miles of walking and constant red-winged blackbird companionship, but by the end of the walk they were enjoying snacks with my niece.😁
