During this latest spell of bitter cold winter weather I was able to finish a beautiful 1000 piece Old Book Store puzzle by Steve Crisp and reflect on events of the last week. Finally heard news of Peyton Manning probably returning next year as the Broncos quarterback and he looked great in his tux on the red carpet for the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special (SNL 40) and again with Derek Jeter during the show introducing the best sports clips over the last forty years (it is still difficult to imagine Jeter will not be reporting to Spring Training next week). A few of the highlights of ‘SNL 40’ were watching all the old clips, the fantastic opening with Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake, the “Celebrity Jeopardy” skit with Will Farrell as host Alex Trebek and the celebrities Sean Connery (Darrell Hammond), Burt Reynolds (Norm MacDonald), Tony Bennett (Alec Baldwin), Matthew McConaughey (Jim Carrey), and the musical segment with Martin Short and Beyonce (Maya Rudolph) that was extremely entertaining even before they introduced some of the SNL great musical acts, including King Tut (Steve Martin), the Opera Man (Adam Sandler), Nick Ocean (Bill Murray) and The Blues Brothers (Jim Belushi and Dan Ackroyd). Took a break from watching Academy Award nominees and went to the movie theater to see Kingsman: The Secret Service, and while there were moments of the film I enjoyed, I walked out of the theater thinking I should have seen Still Alice or The Imitation Game. I have always watched some form of the news on television and have been a dedicated reader of the New York Times. As of late, my favorite news sources have been the New York Times, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, Charlie Rose on PBS and CBS This Morning, the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and Greg Gutfeld on The Five. Unfortunately last week there were several great losses in the media and news business with the sudden death of one of my favorite columnists of the NY Times, David Carr, the suspension of Brian Williams, the death of CBS News correspondent Bob Simon, and the retirement announcement of Jon Stewart. Media talk turned very quickly to possible replacements, but for now this great talent will be appreciated and missed and provide another reminder that there are some unique voices, writers, and talents that cannot be replaced.
