iPhone Journey – Day 1

Over the last year I’ve developed an obsession with the 10,000 steps a day theory while I’ve also developed an issue with numbness in my neck when carrying my Nikon camera. I’ve decided I cannot give up my step count, but I’m willing to try using my iPhone as my only camera. While I will definitely miss the closeups of my favorite birds, hopefully I will find new ways to capture good vibes. All photo editing will also be taking place on my iPhone along with blog posting. This iPhone photo was taken yesterday while walking in the park with Harper looking for fall colors and we were happy to share the moment with the sandhill cranes. Harper’s thrilled the Nikon is staying at home, as I tend to stop longer when I have both cameras.

  1. I can’t remember the last time I carried my camera – or even where it is… We also aim for 10000 steps daily, and mostly get there, certainly averaged over the week! Harder to do in this mini heatwave, and Scout being sensibly reluctant…

    1. I’ve been known to actually carry three cameras and painfully regret it, but the numbness scares me and I’m now actually looking forward to expanding my iPhone obsession. Another day of hot/humid and Harper refuses to help with my step count!!🐾🙂

  2. welcome. i made the switch and never looked back (yeah, sometimes I miss the “real camera” feel and heft but not enough to ever return)

    1. Thank you!🙂 I’ve slowly been transitioning to the iPhone over the last year, but struggled with always wishing I had the Nikon with me. After the pain and numbness the last few outings with the Nikon, I’m finally excited about a complete change. Always enjoy and look forward to your great poems and photos!🙂

  3. I understand the weight issue with a regular camera. I recently switched from Nikon to using a Sony A7C, great camera and it’s a Full Frame camera. I’ve tried using my iPhone 12 only, but have found it to be lacking in getting telephoto photos. Phone cameras for me have a long way to go to catch up. Maybe you can find a belt or similar to wear the camera on your waist instead of tugging at your neck.

    1. Because of back and neck pain I’ve been trying different cameras and straps, but now that numbness is happening I’m ok with just trying the iPhone and see how it changes my photography. I’ve been using the iPhone more often over the last year and am actually excited about trying something different.🙂

      1. I see, there is no doubting how nice a phone camera can be as it’s always in your pocket or purse! I tried using the iPhone on a trip to visit my family in Michigan before, I was not happy with most of the photos, but that is on me for lack of getting set up right and framing the images better. I hope your neck/back pain will get better. I have neck pain and three herniated lower lumber in my back, not a stranger to back pain. i have a handicap tag in my truck. 😭

      2. Thank you!🙂 I love my iPhone and while I will have to give up some shots, I’m hoping it might lead to more creativity. My doctor thought I would need surgery within five years, but I’m hoping to avoid that option.🙂

      3. You’re welcome, I hope the surgery won’t be needed. Surgery is the absolute last resort for me. My cousin in Michigan had that years ago and it really messed him up.

  4. Two options. 1) get chest harness such as used for binoculars; 2) as suggested above, get a point-and-shoot which typically is carried with a wrist strap. I ditched the bigger cameras when I became a road warrior and bought a Nikon Coolpix A900. I have a 35x optical zoom and 4K resolution (if desired). I use my Pixel 6 Pro about a third of the time, and many times the photos are difficult to tell apart. On a different note, I have a similar numbing problem in my upper left leg from years spent carrying a wallet in my front pocket. Now it goes numb all the time in bed when it’s in certain positions and nothing can be done about it. Probably wise for you to stop sooner than later.

    1. Thank you for the suggestions!🙂 I’ve tried different straps and cameras over the last few years because of my lower back pain and leg/foot numbness, but now that my neck is also experiencing numbness I’m more than ready to see what I can accomplish with the iPhone. I’m actually looking forward to the change and new journey.🙂
