Orphan Black – Binge-Worthy TV

The season three finale of the binge-worthy TV show Orphan Black was aired on June 20 on BBC America, but thanks to the wonderful invention of the DVR for when you fall behind on your TV shows, I was able to record and binge-watch the thrilling Orphan Black clones.  Season three recaptured the greatness of season one after a second season that at times was a little too bazaar.  For those not familiar with Orphan Black, the story revolves around Sarah Manning, Helena, Cosima Niehaus, Alison Hendrix, Rachel Duncan and the deceased Elizabeth Childs, in a thrilling action conspiracy about a group of young women who discover they are clones being controlled by a military/scientific conspiracy.

Not only does the show offer a very interesting storyline, but it also offers the wonderful opportunity of watching Tatiana Maslany portray all of the clones in such a brilliant manner that you immediately find yourself viewing the group of clones as completely separate characters to the point you find yourself favoring different clones (Allison and Helena were my favorites in season three) throughout the series while losing sight that Tatiana Maslany is right in front of you at all times.  For more about Tatiana Maslany and Orphan Black, there was a excellent article by Lili Loofbourow in the April 2, 2015 New York Times Magazine (http://nyti.ms/1yEWZEr).  The show also includes a male line of clones portrayed by Ari Millen and while I was a little skeptical that two sets of clones played by two actors could work, it actually worked remarkably well.

The fascinating clones are aided in their battle against their creators and a search for a cure for a genetic defect that is making them ill by a wonderful cast of characters.  There is the priceless foster-brother Felix Dawkins (Jordan Gavaris),Version 2Allison’s husband Donnie (Kristian Bruun) who was great in season three, Cosima’s girlfriend and Dyad Institute co-worker, Delphine (Evelyne Brochu), Sarah and Felix’s foster-mother Siobhan (Maria Doyle Kennedy), Sarah’s boyfriend Cal (Michiel Huisman) and their daughter Kira (Styler Waxler), Version 2Detective Art Bell (Kevin Hanchard), and the enigmatic Paul Dierden (Dylan Bruce).    Season three sent Allison and Donnie in several new directions and the addition of one of her old boyfriends, Jason Kellerman (Justin Chatwin), and these new directions livened up the soccer mom’s neighborhood and provided many laughs throughout the season.

Orphan Black has been renewed for a fourth season and I will be waiting for the return of Sarah, Helena, Allison, and Cosima and hoping the wonderful Orphan Black writers keep the clones together and possibly add a few more ‘sestras’, as Helena would say.
