Blue Winter

Winter uses all the blues there are.

One shade of blue for water, one for ice,

Another blue for shadows over snow.

The clear or cloudy sky uses blue twice–

Both different blues.  And hills row after row

Are colored blue according to how far.

You know the bluejay’s double-blue device

Shows best when there are no green leaves to show.

And Sirius is a winterbluegreen star.

  1. A lovely tribute to blue, ACI — and I enjoyed seeing all the blues in your photos.

    1. Thank you! Winter has arrived again instead of spring and offered another wonderful opportunity to photograph the ice on the lake in the blustery wind.

  2. I had never read Robert Francis before seeing your blog and I was captivated by the line evoking shadow above the snow. I have now read many of his poems and am astonished by their quiet, honest beauty. Thank you so much for introducing me to him!

    1. One of the things I love about blogging is the introduction to new authors, movies, places and ideas. I’m glad we could share his poetry, I just discovered him and share your enthusiasm

      1. I think you might also enjoy the poetry of Alice Oswald a British poet who writes wonderfully about the natural world.

      2. Thank you very much for the recommendation. Two of her books that I thought I would look at first are Falling Awake and Weeds and Wildflowers.
