Turtle Party At The Lake

It appears the first party of the year at the lake was a success.  I’ve never seen this many turtles while out kayaking and in addition to the many painted and common musk turtles in attendance, the spiny soft-shell turtle made its first appearance at the party.



Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!’

    Very nice! I saw some painted turtles for the first time this year. A sure sign of spring.

      Thank you! It was another windy day on the lake and it was hard to keep the kayak at a good angle for the shots, but luckily every time the waves moved me in another direction there was another group of turtles.

      There were about twenty turtles in various spots on the lake and luckily only a few decided I was too close for comfort and jumped back in the water.

    A turtle party? I want to go! How lucky to see so many — I’ve never seen any around where we live so I’m turtle-green with envy. 🙂

      I’m glad I could share the fantastic turtle party. It was a delightful surprise to see so many of them. I’m usually not out in the kayak in April and by summer I often only encounter a few of them in one section of the lake.

    How wonderful that you have so many turtles! I don’t see them very often. Raccoons and otters eat the eggs and babies, I think.

      I was kayaking by the shore to see if the great blue herons had arrived and instead discovered turtles in all their hiding spots. I had no idea there was such a large group of turtles enjoying the lake.

      I’m glad you enjoyed the turtles and I hope spring makes an appearance there soon. We’ve been lucky to have a few beautiful spring days and it’s been a wonderful month for watching the animals celebrate the end of winter.
