I’ve Been Pondering…

Brand loyalty and ice storms. I think we set a record with three ice storms in two weeks and we have probably set another record on the number of text messages and cancellations concerning our new stove purchase.

We’ve lost count, but do believe there have been over 30 text messages and ten delivery date cancellations. They haven’t broken our spirit though, as for a brief moment we believe the new delivery date in every text.

Being someone who is a strong believer in brand and customer loyalty and trying to buy Union-Made In American products and support local businesses,

it hasn’t been easy watching how much has changed over the decades. It definitely hasn’t happened as quick as our February freeze and melt schedule,

but we lost some wonderful local businesses when the big box retail stores moved in and now we’re seeing the end of our traditional malls and some of those big box stores due to online shopping. There are endless debates about the global economy, big box stores and Amazon and I’m discovering as more of my favorites disappear and the quality of service and products worsens that I’m unwilling to begin new mediocre or miserable consumer relationships until items are officially beyond repair.

Any major household items we have had to replace recently have not been even close to the quality of the the very old items and with parts no longer available for our Jenn-Air stove built in the ‘80s, I’m being forced to buy a new downdraft stove and brand. I’ve been saying for months we can live without a stove and wouldn’t it be more fun to buy another wonderful Apple or Nikon product, but that seems to ruffle some feathers as not everyone shares my beliefs.

    1. I know, decades ago I loved shopping and now I have to be dragged into some of these new stores.😁

  2. I know exactly what you mean. When we replaced our stove about seven years ago, we lost a sturdy work horse that had cooked, baked, and simmered many, many meals for our family and friends. We bought the same brand, same kind, and to be blunt, the new stove is a piece of crap. Sigh. Good luck.

    1. My oven broke a year ago and I’ve been so disillusioned with the other appliances we had to finally replace that I’ve been using our 50 year old stove in the basement and happy getting in extra steps going up and down the stairs and being very stubborn about having to buy a new one. Never imagined it would be this difficult and we just received another phone call cancelling and rescheduling the delivery. I already have an attitude about the new stove and will be the only one still cooking in the basement.😁

  3. Nice truck! I drive a 2015 GMC two-door short-bed truck with just 32K on it. It’s also white. I feel your frustration with seeing mom-and-pop businesses succumb to the big box stores. America was built on those businesses!

I hope you can find appliances that meet your needs, they aren’t as good as they used to be yet we are charged a premium price for them. I am very brand loyal when it comes to trucks since my family had GM dealerships for decades.

    Great photos!

    1. Thank you!🙂 I developed brand loyalty at a young age and many of them remain to this day. I still miss many of the great places that didn’t survive all these changes, but thankfully there have been a few new favorites added over the years. They just changed our delivery date again today and I still think it would be possible to live without a stove.😁

      1. Well… I like my gas stove! I would buy other GM products and nothing else. having grown up in GM dealerships, it pains me to see so many Japanese cars on the roads here and everywhere. It’s borderline traitorous!

  4. The lack of quality customer service has certainly ruffled my feathers in the last few years. Yet, to me it doesn’t seem to be as severe a drop as the quality of the products. Planned obsolescence is the norm now. Nothing is made to last, yet everything costs more.

    1. I use to be one of those people that was excited about buying new items, but not anymore. I drag my feet as long as possible now over any new purchases or dreaded remodeling projects. Great comparison between local businesses and box stores is that our water pressure tank recently broke and the company came out the same day and replaced it and this afternoon we received another call cancelling and rescheduling our stove delivery. Of course, we don’t believe them about the new date.😁

  6. It’s all going to sh*t I tell ya… On Tuesday, my brother’s (expensive and less than 4 years old low miles on the clock) truck caught fire and burned the engine block and front of cab to a crisp in about 5 minutes. He’s limited mobility but managed to haul himself out without injury. Now he’s stuck with fun insurance claim and a dilemma as to a reliable replacement. No new vehicles to be found that meet his needs out there, unless he waits for months and months on delivery. He also had to wait months for a custom stove to be delivered after remodelling his kitchen to meet his needs.
I like my new(ish) Tacoma, does the job, but it wasn’t the Bronco I’d hoped for. Canceled that order after 12+ months delayed delivery and no firm date in sight. It’s all going to sh*t I tell ya…
That said, have a great weekend! Is the Premier League still,a thing? Asking for a friend (that would be my brother, he of the fried truck and Everton season ticket holder. He has all the luck…)

    1. Thankfully your brother made it out safely and I hope he somehow is able to find a new vehicle sooner than expected!! What a stressful situation not only dealing with insurance claims, but also the high cost of everything and the lengthy searching. I remember my first independent trip with the family vehicle going to visit my brother for the weekend and the car breaking down and catching on fire. I didn’t take another trip for awhile and was never loyal to that brand. I’m continuing to make my minimal life plans and one scenario has us living in a small town where only a bicycle is needed to buy wine and vegetables at the local market since we’re vegans, but I’m assuming that would be greeted with the same response as living without a stove. Thanks for the laugh over it’s all going to sh*t I tell ya, as our delivery date was changed again today and right now we’re in a winter storm warning and just had a very loud round of thundersnow. Harper is hiding and I’m about to join her. Enjoy the weekend and I’ll be hoping for an Everton win this weekend for your brother!!🙂

  7. I had a washing machine I I bought from a shop that sold slightly (externally) damaged washing machines, it lasted me 20 years! We replaced it 5 years ago with a new one and that broke a week after its 5 year warranty ran out! We were told it’s more expensive to fix than replace, so now I’m on my 3rd one. For sure things in the 90s were made better than recent years.

    1. We had the same thing happen to our washing machine. We had one that lasted over twenty years and the new one broke the first year it was out of warranty and we got the same line that it’s more expensive to repair. We bought a different model and I don’t expect it to last much longer than the previous one.🙂
