I’ve Been Pondering…

My lack of successful predictions. As we begin my all-time favorite sporting event, the first two rounds of March Madness, I remembered that I’ve never predicted a NCAA March Madness Final Four and I’ve definitely learned this month that I can’t predict the weather. My sports predictions have been so bad at times that my niece claims she would be a millionaire if she had consistently placed bets against my favorites. I’ve been known over the years to binge-watch the Oscars nominees and predict the wrong winners and am shocked I failed to predict that the only two nominees watched this year would be Top Gun: Maverick and the fabulous best original song Naatu Naatu, from the movie RRR. Whoops, almost forgot to mention The Banshees Of Inisherin, love Brendan Gleeson but still can’t talk about the movie. Then we go from the daily fun predictions to the things I never saw coming our way. On the serious side of life, two more items occurred in March that have left me feeling unable to predict anything. The first is the COVID-19 pandemic and the three year anniversary last week that was mostly ignored by our leaders and tv media and that the United Nations Secretary General would give a speech for International Women’s Day stating that gender equality is 300 years away. These last two have left me speechless, saving me from more bad predictions.

  1. You packed a lot in one short paragraph. Predictions are very hard to make. Some people do seem to have a knack, but like you, I’m not one of them. However, I was not surprised when “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once” made its sweep. Lots of buzz and other award for that movie. Not my favorite, that’s for sure, but I did think the acting was good. My favorite was “Banshee,” even though it was a feel-bad movie. Thought Colin Farrell was so good and was hoping he’d win for best actor. But he didn’t. Instead, it went to Brendan Fraser. I haven’t seen “The Whale” and don’t plan to. What fun “Naatu Naatu” was! As for Covid, yeah. I still know people who are getting it, and Clif and I continue to be careful. Last Saturday, I went to a poetry reading in town, and only two were wearing masks—me and another man. I suppose at some point I just have to accept that I will get the darned virus, but I’m still being careful.

    1. I’m not sure what happened with watching my Oscars film festival this year, but somehow I kept choosing a book or great tv series. I’m sure I’ll catch up on a few and I did think Colin Farrell was great, but that movie was too much for me. We’re still wearing our masks when indoors and after not being sick (colds, flu or COVID) for three years and knowing people who have had serious complications from these illnesses, I don’t see that changing. Too many people continue to go out while ill and after keeping family members with health problems safe these last three years I think we’ve been making the right choices. I struggled with many of the changes, but I’m now enjoying the new lifestyle and will be even happier when it warms up and the outdoor dining patios open.🙂

      1. Banshee was not an easy movie to watch, that’s for sure. Like you, were are still wearing masks when we are not with family. We are in a decided minority here, and I’ve been debating how long we should continue with the masks. Still not ready to give them up. Having family members with health problems would definitely tip the scales in favor of continuing with masks.

      2. We’re definitely in the minority and have had people make comments that we’re still wearing a mask, but it never fails that there is someone coughing nearby and I’m thrilled I have my mask.🙂

  3. A perfect pic for today. We don’t have snow and ice to clear off before we shoot hoops outside here…we just have to adjust our shots for the 30-40 mph wind gusts. Enjoy the Madness!

  4. 300 years?! Yes, speechless on that, and a few (many) other items… I’m happy I’m not so young…
On your predictions success rate, would you mind predicting a Chelsea win this weekend? Much appreciated!
Love the snow photo, and fingers crossed for you spring is arriving by this weekend. We have had two sunny days, and we’ve all forgotten that March is one of the wettest months – one of the 12 wettest for here, haha – and think we’re done with the heavy rain. I’m not betting on a drier than usual season.

    1. You’re never going to believe this, but there is a great chance Everton will win this weekend. As I have never taken that advice to bet with your head and not with your heart, I’m about to jinx Chelsea by cheering them on this weekend because they are the former team of my favorite Roy Kent on Ted Lasso!!😁 The world leaves me speechless quite often these days and each year I appreciate even more that I grew up in a different time. We were lucky to have a gorgeous day and I won’t mind the bad weather the next few days as I remain indoors watching hopefully some great March Madness basketball. Enjoy the Everton win!!😁

      1. That’s three points in the bag then – thank you!
As I get closer to full retirement, Mrs PC is concerned that my inner Roy Kent is becoming more and more apparent. Most work requests are met (in my head) with a gruff “no” and/or “f*#k off!” I see this as a good thing.

      2. I was beginning to wonder if I had missed a retirement announcement on your blog and do you follow up those great responses with the great Roy Kent chant?!?!😁

      3. I haven’t been to a PL game for many years, and the language then was colourful – after watching Brighton-Palace yesterday, hearing what still got through the broadcaster attempts to muffle certain chants makes the Roy Kent chant seem quaint!
We’re not fully retired yet – I’m freelancing (that translates to saying “no” in a Roy Kent manner to most requests) and Mrs PC wraps up in the next month or two. We’re looking forward to being gainfully unemployed…too young or vain to admit being retired!

      4. Congratulations to both of you and embrace being young retirees – it’s fabulous!!!😁 Definitely more time to keep up with important sporting events, might have to be careful that Mrs. PC doesn’t set out a swear jar, could have a drastic effect on the beer “budget”!! One of the things I’ve been surprised about over the years is that instead of the initial thinking that I’ll have more time to do this or that, each year I become more fussy about how I spend my time. Won’t take long for Scout to be as spoiled as Harper!🐾😁
