I’ve Been Pondering…

The gift of a good walk. Recently I enjoyed the New York Times article “Whatever The Problem, It’s Probably Solved By Walking” by Andrew McCarthy, who has now walked the Camino de Santiago twice. While I’ve always dreamed of walking that pilgrimage route, I still discover any walk to be a gift. I’m happy while walking on Main Street,

along the river with the birds for company,

through the door of my favorite bakery

or hopefully on our last frost filled morning of the season with Harper.

The magical gift of a walk is that even when retracing your steps, each walk carries with it the sensation of entering a different path than the last time.

I’ll be looking forward to Andrew McCarthy’s new book “Walking With Sam: A Father, A Son, And Five Hundred Miles Across Spain” and possibly watching one or two of my favorite walking movies this weekend (The Way, A Walk In The Woods, Edie) after a good walk.

“Has anyone ever emerged from ambling through nature for an hour and regretted their improved state of being?”

  1. We saw a Rick Steves episode featuring the Camino de Santiago. I was intrigued!! ALSO: Loved Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods! For me, there is nothing better than walking in the woods, any time of year, but I’m especially fond of autumn. My husband accompanies me but it’s not really his thing. (What?!?!?) I’ve always enjoyed the woods. It’s been said it’s impossible to be in a bad mood when you’re walking among the trees of the forest and I believe that to be true!

    1. I love discovering books, movies or shows about the Camino de Santiago and I’ll keep dreaming about it!! I’ve already lost track of how many times I’ve watched A Walk in the Woods and I loved the book. I look forward to every chance to enjoy sunrise and an early morning walk by the lakes, in the city or in the woods and this summer I’m hoping to add more evening walks. Thankfully Harper is always excited about our walks and somewhat tolerates me stopping for photos!🐾😁

  2. I so love seeing pictures of the area where you live. It seems to me that you have the perfect combination of town and nature. Walking always shows you different things, even when you take the same route. That window is spectacular. Have fun watching those walking movies. I really liked The Way.

  6. The murals are very beautiful! Hi, Harper, your little pads must be so cold. I do miss walks in the woods behind my Michigan home but that was years ago now. Have a great weekend!

  7. Oh hello, thanks for the book recommendations I used to be madly in love with Andrew McCarthy back in his brat pack days and didn’t know he’d written these books.

    1. Loved the Brat Pack (Andrew McCarthy was a favorite) and I’ve been enjoying his travel writing for years. Emilio Estevez wrote and directed one of my all time favorites, The Way. I also find myself watching too many Rob Lowe shows.😁

  8. I think I read McCarthy’s first book about walking – too lazy to look up the title – and remember it as being pretty good. We’re designed to walk, and I’ve read somewhere, we think and process best at walking pace. Makes sense to me, but then I’ve rarely sprinted anywhere and speed isn’t my thing…
To echo other commenters, Bryson’s “A Walk in the Woods” is great, and the movie adaptation is fun.
I’ll need a long walk to digest the Everton result tomorrow, of that I’m reasonably certain!
Enjoy the long weekend – extra chocolate and then walk it off!

    1. Now that so many of my favorite detectives are on the verge of retirement, my favorite book category may soon be travel writing. Hope you were actually on your walk during the Everton match and what’s going on with Tottenham, they are either firing coaches or they are being thrown out?!?! Hope Calgary has a great week and makes the playoffs!😎

  9. I always feel better after a walk. Theres usually an incident to make them exciting too. Not had time recently to write up any mini adventures. A walk in the Woods is on my Bryson shelf 😀
