Friday Favorite – Red Squirrel Midden

While I’m one that wants to rush through fall cleanup haphazardly so it doesn’t interfere with my football life, I love stopping to appreciate the hard work of the little red squirrels preparing their middens for winter along our driveway. Some years their cone stash is a little chaotic, but it appears we have a little perfectionist hanging out with us this year.

  1. Wowsah! We have red squirrels here, but I have never seen such a thing. A little perfectionists indeed.

  2. The critter has a fine understanding of architecture, what do they do with the cones? Eat them? Sleep under them? Have a dandy weekend!

    1. They usually end up with several piles of cones and I think they do create tunnels between them so they can enjoy their stash all winter. Enjoy the weekend!😎

  4. I didn’tvknow they do that. Our ones bury nuts all over the place and dig up flower bulbs!

    1. All the squirrels have been very busy, we have acorn shells and branch tips from our spruces all over the driveway, several middens along the driveway and holes all over the yard from them burying nuts.πŸ™‚
