Thankful Thursday

This Thursday I’m thankful for a medical diagnosis to explain why I haven’t felt like myself and the fatigue that has been affecting my daily life. After years of precautions to avoid COVID, the flu and colds, an overabundance of stress has led to a recurring case of mono that I had no idea was possible. Rest and no stress has been prescribed and after asking for a definition of both, I am working on it. Thankfully I have a large stack of books filled with favorites by Ian Rankin, Elizabeth Strout, Michael Connelly, Richard Osman and Malcolm Gladwell to keep me busy and help me not notice the fall leaves covering the yard as I adjust to the strange world of rest and relaxation.

  1. I didn’t know that was possible either. I’m sorry that it’s happened to you but hopefully it has helped to know what the problem is. A good time of year to cosy up and rest. Take good care 😊

    1. Thank you and it has been a big relief to know why I’ve been exhausted and be forced to rest and relax because I was still pushing through the fatigue every day. I’ve discovered I was more stressed than I knew and that I’ve obviously been wearing Harper out because she’s really enjoying all the naps.📖🐾🙂

    1. After five days, it has become quite obvious that somewhere along the way I completely forgot how to relax and was too stubborn not to stop pushing through the fatigue. It may be necessary to print out definitions for both so I don’t lose track of their importance again.🙂

  3. Feel better soon. I had mono as a teenager. It was not fun. I missed a lot of school and got over-anxious and stressed out about how much school I had missed so I missed a bunch more. I fell behind in my schoolwork, my grades suffered, and I lost a lot of weight. It was hard to get back to normal.

    1. Thank you!!🙂 I’ve always tried to push through any illnesses and injuries and whether it’s age or stress there was no relief from the fatigue and it’s been very difficult since summer. I definitely plan on making changes in my life going forward.🙂

  8. Oh, gosh! Yes, rest, rest, rest. And read whatever relaxes you. Have you ever read the Miss Read series that take place in English villages in the mid-twentieth century? If not, you might want to give them a try. I turn to them whenever life gets overwhelming.

  9. Ooh, dragging butt is no fun. So is it a low grade bacterial infection?
    You probably don’t want to hear this, but did you know that cane sugar suppresses the immune system? I’ve switched to honey/maple as my sweetener and had to say goodbye to most treats. 😱 IKR? Blasphemy!!! Very hard to give up dessert! Instead, I treat myself with homemade treats that are sugar free. It takes commitment, and perhaps, once you get better, a treat now and again will be okay. For me, I still look longingly at bakery shelves, but tell myself for 60 years I ate whatever I wanted, and that was wonderful… now is different, but I am healthy and still kicking. 😉 💕

It’s amazing that I was spending a lot of time over the last couple years working on simplifying my life and just when I thought I was ready to cross the finish line in June, my body begin to tell me that my project was a complete failure and I was concentrating on all the wrong things. I still kept pushing through everything since summer, but this last two weeks finally forced me to stop. Less stress is now a major goal and since July I’ve been reducing my caffeine and sugar. I’ve lost my appetite the last few weeks so that has helped not missing coffee and sugar and I will be changing more things as I go forward. It’s only been five days of rest and now I’m really trying to understand why I wasn’t able to stop myself before my body did it for me.🙂

      1. Life is mysterious, isn’t it? My go-to de-stressor is puttering in the garden, but that is only for half the year. The other half I must rely on forest bathing (walking alone), sitting quietly and practicing yoga. Even 20 minutes of yoga can do wonders (it’s all in quieting the breath). Do you do yoga?

      2. I’ve never tried yoga and it might finally be the time to start. I love my walks and have missed them the last few weeks.🙂

      3. I’ve been doing gentle yoga for 15 years, and though I’ve done meditation I find it hard to discipline myself to sit for 20 min. 2x a day! Yoga 2x/wk works better. 😉 There are many different types of yoga, and it may take a few tries to find a teacher who isn’t motivated by ego. While it is important to learn correct postures so as not to hurt anything, ultimately it is YOUR practice, and you need to have a teacher who emphasizes that. Everyone is different!

      4. Thank you for the encouragement and information! I’ll definitely need to learn the type that works best with spine issues and when I start feeling a little better I’ll try some yoga, but I don’t know if I’m the meditation type.🙂

  10. The worms will pop up, grab some leaves and take them under the grass to munch on, the wind will take lots of the leaves, some will blow under bushes and shrubs and act as mulch to suppress weeds. Don’t worry about leaves 🍁 🍂 they’ll sort themselves out. Hope you feel better soon x

  12. Leaves: last fall I left ’em for the first time. In the spring I blew what was left mostly to the gardens, a few to the street for pickup. My sinuses thank me too–all that leaf detritus kicks of an allergic response. This year we replaced grass lawn with native plants, and were told, “leave the leaves!”

    Yoga/meditation: active people sometimes find walking meditation a bit easier to approach. Generally one walks really slowly. I’m supposing you aren’t walking much now? A very gentle and deliberate walk around the house (inside or outside) focusing on the breath would be a starter…placing the feet with each inhalation or exhalation.

    When I overstressed 30 years ago, I found the book Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn very helpful. Though he aimed his program at people with chronic pain, the approach is suitable for the stresses of modern living (which he addresses in the book). I unfortunately moved on, eventually had panic attacks at 61 and had to learn it all over again, ….that’s a different story for my own blog.

    1. Thanks for the information and book recommendation! I loved his book Wherever You Go, There You Are and added your recommendation to my library. I’m not back to my walks yet and it will certainly help when we’re out walking again. I’ve had to adjust my yard work obsessions over the last five years and can’t believe the progress I’ve made over the last week because I was asked today if all my leaves had fallen and I actually had no idea since I’ve refused to acknowledge any leaves in the yard over the last week.🙂

      1. Congrats on leaves. I was going to mention JBK’s other book, but didn’t want to overwhelm. The one I mentioned is much more clinical, but also much more how to.
