Monday Musings

After weeks of struggling with fear and worry, an attitude adjustment was needed this weekend after the full realization that we will most likely be living a form of social distancing throughout this year and into next year to protect family members at a higher risk. ย There was some minor swearing along the way, but kayaking, which has now been approved as an outdoor activity, and

a M&M’s delivery helped tremendously. ย There has been much talk about how individuals and society will change during this isolation and I’ve already seen changes, since I now believe I am a hugger as I was ready to run out the door and hug the Costco delivery man arriving with my M&M’s.

During this attitude adjustment it was time to be grateful for whatever simple enjoyments can be discovered throughout the day and once I began looking I realized that while watching the news absolutely frightens and saddens me, that somehow seeing all the reporters and their guests in their homes with bookshelves filled with books lifted my spirits. ย Harper is getting ready for her first video call and hoping for a guest appearance on A Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver and Real Time With Bill Maher that are thankfully producing shows from home.

At times it is very difficult to find a balance concerning what to write about while watching what is happening in the world, but hopefully sharing a few simple moments helps everyone escape for a minute.

    1. Reducing my M&Mโ€™s and news addictions probably would lead to a healthier lifestyle.๐Ÿ˜

  2. Yay!!! You got your M&M’s!!!! I feel exactly the same way about seeing reporters and guests in their homes with book-filled shelves. Love it. My Rollos came last week. ๐Ÿ˜‰ On a more serious note…adjustment has been difficult even for us introverts. I’ve heard that this is a marathon, not a sprint, and we must prepare accordingly. Sounds like you’ve done that very thing. Really, really like that mug!

    1. Our first grocery delivery was wonderful and Iโ€™ll never make the mistake of not having an extra supply of M&Mโ€™s!๐Ÿ˜ I wish I could see all the titles on the book-filled shelves!๐Ÿ˜ This was the first weekend that it felt like we were somewhat adjusting. For our house and my momโ€™s we have the decontamination process for groceries completely under control and between adhering to the aggressive social distancing and other expert recommendations it has helped ease some of the worry and feel weโ€™re doing everything we can to keep everyone safe as I go between our homes. Our state went over 17,000 cases today and 727 deaths and honestly at this point until there is a vaccine or widespread testing I plan on adhering to this lifestyle so I donโ€™t have to constantly worry. Iโ€™m definitely no longer interested in when the politicians will guess about an ending.

      1. Well, you have seen the error of your ways. Now you know you must stockpile M&M’s. Glad to read you have developed a routine for your house and your mom’s house. Such routines bring peace of mind. I’ve come to the same conclusion about the vaccine. And politicians, especially the ones at the very top. Such sobering statistic. Best to you and your family. Stay safe, be well!

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ Iโ€™m not sure if the attitude adjustment would have been as successful without the kayaking and M&Mโ€™s, but itโ€™s easier beginning this week with an acceptance and understanding of how we need to live going forward and to always remember to stop and appreciate the simple moments along the way.

  4. So happy that kayaking is back on the menu for you! And that the delivery guy made his escape unhugged.
Harper looks slightly overwhelmed by the โ€œto readโ€ pile behind her. Clutching at straws to find silver linings, but extra time to read is something, as well as finding Iโ€™m still a member of the excellent Calgary Public Library service, and they have an enormous collection of e-books. Phew!
I hope your week is full of good books, blue skies, calm paddling, and enough M&Mโ€™s to keep bowls replenished until the next delivery!

    1. Thank you!๐Ÿ™‚ After a month without M&Mโ€™s (could be a record!), I might have gotten a little carried away placing a few orders and I should be able to survive on M&Mโ€™s for months!๐Ÿ˜ During this last month itโ€™s been difficult to concentrate and Iโ€™ve been watching more Netflix (beginning season 4 of Peaky Blinders tonight) than reading, but kayaking and M&Mโ€™s have a calming effect on me and I was finally back to reading over the weekend. Went kayaking this morning and it was wonderful between the beautiful weather and no people on the lake. It was strange to realize in just over a month how safe it felt kayaking and that you could relax outdoors compared to trying to navigate social distancing at the busy parks in this strange new world (although at one point I asked a swan if they wanted a hug).๐Ÿ˜

  6. Only minor swearing? You’re stronger than I, friend. And I agree about the M&Ms!

    1. ๐Ÿ˜Ok, I really didnโ€™t want to share it, but there was probably more swearing and M&Mโ€™s than what is recommended (I might have received multiple deliveries, just in case the first was cancelled)!๐Ÿ˜
