The New Michigan Winter

In our old Michigan winters, by this time of the season snowmobilers would be traveling over some of our 6,500 miles of snowmobile trails, our 40 ski areas would be busy with skiers and other outdoor enthusiasts would be enjoying winter festivals, ice fishing and hockey on the frozen lakes. While the ski resorts are finally able to begin making snow with the colder temps, unfortunately that’s just not the same. On New Year’s Day the Great Lakes had the smallest ice cover in at least the last 50 years. I’ve always loved winter, but have been very slowly adjusting to these changes even though at this age I appreciate the days that snow shoveling and driving on icy roads is not required. Luckily with a little over 2,000 biking trails in our state there is plenty to see and do until the snow and ice finally appear and for those like my brother who has always created his own path, our beaches are the perfect place for a winter’s day bike ride.

    1. I don’t think I can wait til spring and it’s going to have to be snow biking – that will give me a wonderful excuse to get a new bike!! I’ll order you some lights with my new bike, even though yours is perfect as it is!🚴🏼‍♀️❤️

    1. Thank you!!🙂 I always love your winter photos, but this is the first year I’m not complaining as much about winter’s late arrival.🙂

      2. I believe your storm is heading our way and somewhere along the way it will be bringing rain with it.☃️☔️

  4. Nice bike, and nice to be out on it – with the fat tyres, he could handle some snow! Maybe this week if the forecast is accurate…

    1. Thank you and I’ve told him he needs a set of my new lights for his bike (I won’t tell you the response)!😁 We have a winter weather advisory for tonight for 2-5 inches of snow, but I still won’t believe it til I see it!!☃️

  5. The same is true for Maine. Only the barest skim of ice on the lakes and ponds. Yesterday we got our first real snowfall of the season, but it is supposed to rain again midweek. Beautiful, beautiful beach.

    1. Thank you!!🙂 We have a snowstorm on the way immediately followed by rain. I hope it all melts or that is going to be awful heavy wet snow. I’ve been listening to the Strong Sense of Place podcast and love it!!🙂

  6. I was just commenting on our lack of snow here in Iowa the other day, pitying all those snowmobilers (and dealerships!) unable to cash in on a winter wonderland. However, we’re under a winter storm warning today with potentially 6-9 inches coming our way – maybe more! Fingers crossed. We need the precip!!

    1. It’s really changed over the decades and our winter season has shortened even more the last few years. Many of our festivals have moved from January to February and some areas that depend on winter tourism have been hit much harder and had to cancel events. We have a winter weather advisory for tomorrow and another sign of our new winter is the 2-5 inches of snow is immediately being followed by an inch of rain. This keeps up we need a snowman with an umbrella emoji.☃️☔️

  7. The winters are indeed very different, the snowmobilers must be very sad! I’ve never heard of that brand of eBike, it looks like a nice bike! I haven’t been riding at all due to the high temps being in the 40s here. Such a bummer.

    1. Never imagined our snowmobile season would compete with eBikes, but I’ve seen a lot and love my brother’s bike. We finally have a snowstorm on the way tomorrow, followed by hours of rain.☃️☔️

      1. It’s crazy! I just got off the phone with my sister down in Tarpon Springs, it’s been very cold rainy way down there too. Las Vegas has a three-day windstorm going and just 45 degrees for the high. Very cold down here!

      2. I can’t believe for our first big snow we get snow, rain and high winds instead of a lovely little snowfall!☃️
