City, Suburb or Country?

I’ve lived the majority of my life in the suburbs, but have loved the years spent visiting or living in cities. Now that the temperature has warmed up, I was finally able to use one of my Christmas coupon gifts from my niece for a “A Walk In The City Of Your Choice.” During the walk I told my niece that in the alternate universe I’m a city woman that gets around town by walking or biking to her favorite coffee house and

bookstore and attending open mic poetry events at the coffee house and staying up past 10:00pm.

My niece proceeded to let me know after a few blocks and dragging me out of a new favorite bookstore that she was ready to be back in the woods and that poor little Harper

would never survive living by railroad tracks.

I had such a wonderful day celebrating fabulous bookstores and a coffee house on every corner that I told my niece I would love more coupons for my birthday and she said that any future coupons would have a one store limit for bookstores and exclude standing by railroad tracks, poetry readings…

  1. What a wonderful gift and a finest kind of day. I live in a rural community and like being surrounded by trees. However, I also love cities, the hubbub and the culture. How far away are you from the city? Close enough for a regular visit?

    1. I LOVE my coupons and if she hadn’t put some cold weather restrictions on them I probably would have used them all by now!😁 I was rather surprised how quickly I went into all the alternate universe city vibes and am already planning more visits. If I won a lottery jackpot, I would love to live in the city of Boston and have a vacation home on Cape Cod.😁 I use to drive all over the place, but find that it takes more of an effort now, but after all the wonderful coffee, books and laughter, I’ll be making more of an effort with or without coupons.😁

  6. Yeah, I don’t think Harper would like that environment, she’d go catatonic, then collapse! 😉

    1. 😁Definitely, it’s been windy on our walks lately (which she doesn’t like) and she jumped five feet when a leaf flew by her.🐾😁

  7. I get Harper not liking being close to railroad tracks. We live about a mile away from a train station. When the trains are passing through they are obliged to blow their horns. Day and night. We’re far enough away they are nothing more than a moment’s distraction. However, there are folks who live right next to the station that gotta be a bit “jumpy” over their proximity.🚄

    1. I don’t think there is a noise or volume loud enough on our sound machine for Harper’s noise issues to ever save her from the sound of a train. I could not believe when we bought it that one of the sounds is a train and the first thing I said was I hope I never hit that button by mistake.🐾😁 My niece made it more than clear she never wants to stand that close to a train flying by and blowing its horn again!!😁

      1. I’m tellin’ ya…there are homes here where the tracks are only a few yards from back yards. I have no earthly idea how high those residents jump when those horns blow.😜

  8. Great post! I think living near or on the edge of a city with access to natural spaces is the best compromise if I can’t have a cabin in the woods, near a lake, close to mountains with an excellent coffee shop and bookstore within a ten minute cycle ride away. I’m pretty undemanding…
Boston! My first US city, and I loved it. We’re only a six hour drive from there, and it’ll be spring soon. Hmm…

    1. It certainly sounds like you have found the perfect spot until you find that special cabin in the woods!! Boston/Cape Cod remain at the top of my list for the perfect city/vacation home combination and I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m definitely dreaming about city living right now…in the alternate universe I’ve found the perfect loft apartment around the corner from a fabulous bookshop and coffee house and have convinced Harper she enjoys riding along with me in a basket on my bike.😎

  9. Those coupons were such an inspired idea. There should always be a reason to visit a bookshop and coffee shops.
