Don’t Disturb Me, I’m Exhausted

I’ve lost track of how much sleep I’ve lost lately thanks to Harper, but at least she’s recovering with many power naps. Harper has always been an anxious dog and we’ve always adapted to new issues while never understanding old issues like how can you be afraid of a tiny fly and chase thirty turkeys into the trees after sneaking out the front door. The latest anxious trend was set off by a sequence of events including a power outage and New Year’s Eve fireworks in the neighborhood. I have to admit I’ve barely recovered from the power outage after having the windows of the house lit up at 3:00 am when a repair person was wandering through the yard with a flashlight looking for the problem. I should be relieved they were on the job so quickly, but I was actually discovering that I was one of those people in horror movies that does everything wrong when someone is lurking in the dark. Lucky I didn’t fall down the stairs tripping over Harper when I discovered my little lantern barely lit up my hand. Harper has always had an issue with clicking noises, especially when everything beeps/clicks when the power goes out, and now she has decided she cannot sleep at night when the furnace clicks on and off. She’s shaking in bed as bad as when we have thunderstorms and fireworks, but boy you should see how quickly that stops and is replaced with excitement when she is in the living room playing at 3:00 am. We’re currently working on solutions or should I say I’m currently working on a solution as she’s passed out next to me on the couch.

    1. Thank you!🐾🙂 Harper’s very happy with the solution of getting up at midnight and playing, but we’re still negotiating. Next plan is to play classical music for her in the middle of the night.🐾🙂

  2. Oh, goodness! A real challenge. As Sandra noted, poor Harper and poor you. Your comment about doing everything wrong in a horror movie made me smile.

    1. Even though she kept me up after 2:30 last night the shaking wasn’t as bad and I’m hoping to try a few more things. My niece and I have always laughed at those people in the horror movies and I was absolutely horrified to discover I was one of them!!😁

  3. 3am when all the fun stuff happens… I hope you and Harper find a solution, one where neither of you is awake in the middle of the night!
Your after dark scares are Scooby Doo the next morning but Stephen King at the time. Still, so long as one of you never says “Let’s split up – I’ll take the basement” you should be ok.

    1. Can you imagine my horror when I discovered I was one of those ridiculous horror movie characters and I was going to have to tell my niece after we’ve laughed at them all these years!!😁

  4. I’m sorry to hear about Harper’s anxiety. My family and I were talking recently about how the fireworks in our area on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve were disruptive for people trying to sleep and all the pets. Have you tried treats with CBD oil and a thunder shirt for Harper?

    1. We are definitely not a fan of the firework holidays and it never fails that just when we think it’s over and she’s beginning to calm down someone sets off another one. I’ve tried the thunder shirt with no luck and have often wondered about the CBD oil.🐾🙂

  5. Oh, dear, not good. Puppy Prozac perhaps?? I know of someone who claims it has helped quite a bit.

    1. We’ve tried different medications, but so far have not found the right one for the noise phobia, although they have helped her overall anxiety issues. Amazing the difference in pet personalities, Gabby had the same issue with the furnace, but use to run through the house all night barking instead of shaking. It’s possible I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in winter in 20 years.🐾😁

  7. Wow. Where to start? My brother recommended that Atlantic article, but I think I would get too depressed. I’m already reading stuff like that in the NYT. Re: Harper and the Clicks (nice band name), several thoughts occur…but I realized they all presume you have central forced-air heating. The simplest is just to turn off the heat at night, throw lotsa blankets on the bed. (Reminds me of heating with wood in my first house.) I sure feel for you and Harper.

    1. I follow so much news that I thought I don’t have the energy to read more about him, but everyone should read that issue of The Atlantic. I’m all for the furnace being turned off, but then I would be responsible for the pipes freezing and I would rather be up all night than hear about that. Hopefully we’ll find a solution soon, I’m going to try playing music for her next.🙂

      1. Lots of good luck. I forgot about pipes freezing. Too long living in the South!

  8. Maybe Harper would like one of those “color noises” I see commercials for? It appears green and brown are considered sleepy-time sounds. Create a noise…take control of the noise issue?

    1. One of my next thoughts was to get the fan out again to drown the sound, but I looked up the color noise sound machine and think I’m going to try that. Thank you!!🐾🙂

    1. I know, we’ve made a lot of progress over the years, but the noise phobias have not been easy to solve.🐾🙂

  10. Aww, poor Harper. What a cutie! My Finley is a nervous little thing—she barks at dogs on the TV and I’m certain, would be disturbed as you were at 3am in the morning! Currently, she’s sleeping. A dog’s life. And sip sip hooray to your coffee choice! 🐾🙂

    1. Thank you!🐾🙂 The worst part is she now has me listening for noises all night and pretty soon neither one of us is going to be able to go to sleep.🐾😁

      1. Doggone it! And you’re welcome ☺️. Finn follows me everywhere now! She’s so nervous and afraid I’ll leave her! Harper, go nighty night so all can sleep tonight. You need itty bitty ear muffs! 🐾🥰😂

  11. I think you deserve that extra shot! Anxiety is not good when you understand what’s going on, but when you don’t understand…poor Harper.

    1. The extra shots have been helping, but we’ve both been exhausted this week. We’re making a little bit of progress, she’s not shaking as bad, but she still keeps waking me all night hoping we can get up way too early to escape the room and play. I just bought a noise sound machine that I hope helps and doesn’t create another noise phobia.🐾🙂
